The God of Generations

Dear God, You know the beginning and the end. Reveal to me what I need to know in this moment from Your Word. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Exodus 12:41-42 - At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.

God makes promises AND remembers them. How many promises have you made and then promptly forgot to make good? How many new year’s resolutions have gone unfulfilled in your life?

God spoke about Israel’s captivity and eventual exodus to Abram in Genesis 15. God said to him, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” Genesis 15:13-16

God knew Israel’s future of slavery in Egypt for 400 years and then the following exodus. God also knew about the sins of the Canaanites (Amorites) in the land. He patiently waited on them. He is not quick to bring judgement. Although God knew the great pain and jubilation ahead, he did not stand idly by and watch the scene unfold. No, he got involved.

The God of generations does not just make pronouncements about the fate of mankind. He gets involved in the details of our lives. He makes and keeps promises in small details and overarching events. God alone can weave patience, redemption, revelation and judgement into the tapestry of our humanity.

The night that Israel walked out of Egypt, the Lord “kept vigil” to ensure that everyone got out safe and sound. You have a God who not only makes promises, but also holds your hand in this day and keeps his promises to you.

The God of generations is carefully working out his promises from generations past. The God of generations is gently walking with you now to ensure you see his movement in your life today.
