Prepare to Meet with God

Psalm 24:3-4 - Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.

A big reason for lifeless quiet times (meetings with God) has to do with our preparation. In Psalm 24, the psalmist is on his way to meet with God. And he knows that preparation is vital for the meeting. To connect with a holy God, we need to be walking in holiness.

Could you imagine stealing $100 from someone and then sitting down for dinner with that same person? How much real relating would be going on? No, there would be no real depth of relationship, unless, of course, you confessed your sin and paid the money back. So too with God, we need first to get rid of rebellion… to turn from our sin, so that real relating can happen. As the psalmist said, we need to "clean our hands and our hearts."

Another reason for flat times with God has to do with our level of expectation. If we come to God without faith, we should not think we will receive anything from him. James 1:6-7 Our statement and action of faith is vital in receiving soul-filling revelation from God. At the start of your quiet time, it is important to speak out your faith that God is alive, and that he wants to meet with you. Hebrews 11:6

Dealing with sin prepares us for a rich encounter with God. Raising our expectation (faith level) is also key in releasing rich encounters with him. The responsibility of walking in holiness and faith is something we can do. God won't do that for us. Do you realize that you can be as close to God as you want to be?

• Will you spend a moment preparing yourself to meet with God? Ask him if there is any sin in your life that would hold you back from meeting with him. If something is revealed to you, confess it. Now tell God that you will turn from this sin and not go back to it.
• Speak out your faith in God. Let him know that you are expecting him to speak… believing that he will reveal himself to you in a fresh, personal way.
