When we think we finally have God figured out… when we believe we can systematize him and his ways, we start to go astray. When our Bible study ends with the same assumptions about God that we began with, we lose our way. When we cease to wonder at the wisdom of God, our worship turns inward. Keep Reading...
Romans 11:33 NASB - Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! In the preceding verses of Romans 9-11, Paul carefully shows us how God is fulfilling his promises to Israel. We know that the Jewish nation, in large part, rejected Jesus. Yet, God is still patiently drawing the new Israel, made up of Jews and Gentiles, to himself. All those who receive Jesus by faith are called children of the promise or the new Israel. Romans 9:8; 10:12 At the time of Paul's writing, many Jews thought they had God figured out. It was only Jewish people who were the favored ones of God, they thought. And then God disrupted their carefully laid system by saying that Gentiles can also be part of the children of God. All that is needed is faith in the saving work of Jesus. At the end of Romans 11, we are again confronted with the truth that God's saving work is made available for everyone. Romans 11:32 The redeeming work of Jesus extends to the poor, the rich, the Asian, the European, the female, the male, and so on… to all who receive Jesus and his work by faith. This incredible truth leads Paul to wonder at and worship this great and patient God. The wisdom and the knowledge of God are deep, much deeper than the depths of the ocean. We should never think we have him figured out. This will only lead to self-idolatry. Instead, we should keep exploring. With the Psalmist, we should say, "Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths." Psalm 25:4 The knowledge of God will be a lifetime pursuit. Never think you have arrived. The best position for Bible study is on your knees. Worship your way through his Word. Stand in awe at his wisdom, then more revelation will come.
