READ James 4:6 - God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. REFLECT Pride says, "I am big enough. I am strong enough. Let me do it myself." A child might actually voice these words. But the proud adult can live these words. Often the proud life can be masked behind a humble smile. Pride says, "Notice me. Please pat me on the back. I need your validation, since I have not been secured in my Father's affirmation." The proud life chooses not to receive love, but rather grabs attention as a false comfort. Pride says, "I must solve my own problems. I will only turn to God as a last resort." We often mean to ask God, but the reality of how we live tells the true story. Pride assumes to know the answers until backed against the wall. Humility says, "Help me, God. Your grace is way better than any solution I could invent." Why did Jesus say, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."? Matthew 10:14 It is the child-like who have open hands to receive God and his kingdom. The proud ones try to create their own kingdom (and fail every time). The humble one is content to be noticed or unnoticed. For his security lies in the truth that the Father has already noticed, adopted and lavished him with love. Humility enables a person to live in a special grace for each moment of life - the ups AND the downs. RESPOND Do you recognize the impulse within you to rely on your own strength and smarts? Your repentance in this moment will open windows of God's grace on your life. You need this, but will you humble yourself to receive it?
