How long can you go without being fed by God’s Word? Pride feeds on flesh. Humility feeds on the Word of God. Keep Reading…
READ Deuteronomy 8:3 - He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. REFLECT How prone we are to rely on our own wisdom! We may have a quiet time, go to church or attend a Bible study. But, how we live in between these times tells the true story. Do we quickly fill ourselves with our own solutions and words of wisdom? How long do we go with neglecting God’s specific direction in our lives? How long can we live without being fed by him? Humility before God causes a hunger for his words. Humility says, “I have great need of being led. God speak to me.” It is actually the Word of God that sustains us and causes us to flourish. Pride says, “My own words and wisdom are good enough. I don’t actually need God.” This is a very scary position to be in. It was the goodness of God that taught the Israelites to depend on his words. If they thought their own strength or smarts could produce food and a livelihood, they would quickly spiral into destruction. God had much better plans for them. The ability to produce their own provision was removed, causing them to realize that their only option for survival was following God’s words. God’s Word brings real life. How long would you go without being nourished by Him? Pride neglects or “forgets” the Word of God - the Bible. Any excuse you may have to leave God’s Word on the shelf (i.e. too difficult to understand; don’t like reading, or don’t think it is relevant to my life) is a statement of pride. This will lead to frailty, apathy, heaviness and ultimate destruction. RESPOND How hungry are you for God’s Word? Take time to humble yourself before the Lord. Tell him of your desperation to hear from him. Now put this into action by taking out His Word. You can start with Deuteronomy 8 (click on passage). Allow God to speak, encourage, convict and feed you.
