It can be easy to treat your quiet time like a duty that needs to be fulfilled or a Christian responsibility to maintain. It is often seen as a one-way street… the chapters you must read, the prayers you must pray, and the commitments you must speak. But, what is God's role in all of this? Keep Reading...
Do you realize that God really desires to meet with you? If you miss this important truth, you will find yourself spinning in circles. We love, because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19 God longs to be close to you… so much so that he sent his Son, Jesus, to bring you close. The death and resurrection of Jesus makes a way for you to meet with God. Romans 8:32 says, "He [God] who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" In other words, your Father has proven that he wants to pour out his presence, gifts and revelation into your life. He wants to meet with you! In your meeting with God, position yourself to receive. Come as a child. "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11-13 As adults, we are used to being in charge. That can easily transfer into our meetings with God. We create routines, daily chapters to read and a list of prayers to pray. We can find ourselves directing God to bring revelation and answer prayers. There is nothing wrong with routine in quiet time. But, we must remember who is the Lord. Be open with God about your need for him. Ask him to open your ears to hear him and direct your thoughts to understand him. The child believes that the Father wants to be with him. The child believes that a reward will come through spending time with the Father. Hebrews 11:6 Be a child. Your Father wants to come close. Question How much do you listen to God in your quiet times? Do you find yourself reading and talking a lot? Application At the start of your meeting with God, let him know that you want to receive from him. Acknowledge that you are his child… and that he is a good Father who wants to give, speak and reveal himself to you. Throughout the remainder of your quiet time, take moments throughout to pause and listen. Be intentional about the listening. It doesn't always come natural. So, purposely quiet yourself and give your Father room to speak and do whatever he would like to do.
