Why Worship?
2 Samuel 22:4 - "I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies." (NIV)
1 Chronicles 16:25 - "For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods." (NIV)
Psalms 145:3 - "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom." (NIV)
Revelation 4:11 - "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” (NIV)
Revelation 5:9 - "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation." (NIV)
Why do we worship God? Perhaps there are many reasons floating around in our minds. We want to bring God glory. We want to show him our love. We want to be re-charged after a long week. We like the music. But, why does God want to be worshipped?
Revelation 5:12 says, "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (NIV) We worship because he alone is worthy of our worship. That should be the foundational reason for our worship. There is no other person or being actually worthy of unbridled worship. Since God actually is that beautiful, holy, pure, merciful, just and truthful, he is worth our worship.
We are led into worship by our experiential knowledge of God. With greater knowledge of God comes greater worship. Likewise, when we sacrifice before God in worship, our knowledge of him increases. Psalm 67 speaks of this cycle - God reveals himself; people worship; the people are blessed; the land produces harvest; God reveals himself; more people worship, etc. For those who do not know God well or are content to know God as a casual acquaintance, their worship will reflect this shallowness. As we dig into the character of God through obedience, worship, study and proclamation, our worship lives will naturally increase. He is worth the investment of our time, focus and strength. He is worthy of our worship.
