1 John 3:2-3 - "Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure" (NIV).
What is filling your glass (your life)? Pure water? Or are you being filled with contaminated water... water that might look good to the naked eye, but is filled with sediment and harmful bacteria? Where are you getting your water from? In the passage above from 1 John 2, we read that Jesus is the source of real purity. The more clearly we see Jesus, the more pure we become. In fact, the hope we have in seeing Jesus face to face one day actually purifies us. However, if we are not listening to and looking at Jesus, our glass will steadily be filled with contaminated water.
What do you fill your life with?
What you fill your life with will determine your purity.
FriendsAre your ears filled with your friends' opinions and input? How much influence do they have in your life? Can you discern impurity in your friends' words?
|
How much time do you spend looking at social media and other visual content (i.e. internet, movies, netflix, etc.)? Can you discern impurity in what you see?
|
FantasyOur own thoughts can be a source of impurity that muddies the waters in our lives. What do you think about when you don't have to think about anything?
|
Your ears, eyes and minds are gateways for purity or impurity to enter your bodies. What sources are you listening to, looking at or thinking about? This will determine the purity of your life.
The Source of Purity
"The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous." Psalm 19:7-9 NIV
God's Word is your never-failing source of purity. Keep His tap on, and you will be filled to overflowing with living water. If you hold a glass under a running tap for long enough, all of the sediment and impurities will rise to the surface and be washed away. Be purified by listening to and obeying God's Word. Read Romans 12:2.
