Salvation = Jesus is Lord
Matthew 7:21-23 - "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’" (NIV)
Romans 10:9-10 - "That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." (NIV)
Philippians 2:9-11 - "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (NIV)
One day every person in heaven, on earth and under the earth will declare that Jesus is Lord (Phil. 2:11). This will happen no matter what someone has previously believed. Of course, it is of urgent importance that we bow the knee to Jesus before it is too late at the final judgement. The truth is - Jesus is Lord, whether you believe it or not. Allow this revelation of the Lordship of Jesus to wash over you. At the final day, we will all declare that he is Lord… not Friend, Companion or Counselor (though he is all of those).
It is clear from Scripture that salvation only comes through Jesus being Lord of our lives. There is actually no salvation apart from declaring that Jesus is Lord of your life. In some Christian circles, people acknowledge Jesus as their Savior. But, following Jesus as Lord can seem like an optional extra. However, Romans 10:9-10 is clear, "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." (NIV).
The declaration of Jesus as Lord needs to match up with a life of obedience to Jesus. It is possible for a person to declare, "Jesus is Lord," and live a life of disobedience. This person will not be saved (Matt. 7:21-23). So both our declaration and our lifestyle of obedience show that we are living with Jesus as Lord of our lives. There is no other type of Christianity. Either Jesus is Lord of all your life, or he is not Lord of your life at all!
