Honor
Exodus 20:12 - “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you" (NIV).
Numbers 20:12 - "But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them" (NIV).
Deuteronomy 26:19 - "He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised" (NIV).
Psalm 62:7 - "My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge" (NIV).
Proverbs 25:27 - "It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor" (NIV).
Romans 13:7 - "Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor" (NIV).
1 Timothy 5:17 - "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching" (NIV).
James 1:9-10 - "The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower" (NIV).
Relationships that are lived out God's way are full of honor. We often think of giving honor to someone when they have excelled or exceeded our expectations. It is a special gift we give to a favored few. But, what is honor? Honor is the giving of respect in attitude and action to a person. It communicates value and worth to that person. 1 Peter 2:17, God says, "Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king" (NIV).
Whom are we to show honor to? Everyone. Why? Everyone is made in the image of God. Everyone is deserving of honor and respect. Of course, we are called to honor God and give Him all the glory due His name (Rev. 4:11). But, this honor is to be spread out to God's children… to those who are close to us (1 Peter 2:17), to those who don't like us (Matt. 5:43), to those whom we are leading (Eph. 6:9) and to those who lead us (Rom. 13:1-7). Let us also not forget God's commandment that comes with a promise.
Exodus 20:12 - “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you" (NIV).
Honor is a gift we can give to one another. It cannot be forced or demanded. Real honor is given and received freely. It is often shown by words of affirmation and actions of kindness. But, always, honor is an attitude of the heart that recognizes that gift of God in the other person. Everyone carries with them inbuilt value and honor due to their status as image-bearers of God.

- Can you think of some "honorable" people in your life? Why are they deserving of honor? Why do we often withhold honor from others?
- How can you show more honor to God?
- Think of a specific way that you can honor: 1) a family member, 2) a co-worker or roommate, 3) a casual acquaintance, and 4) your leader or boss. Now, activate the honoring!
