God is Humble
Isaiah 53:2 - "He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him" (NIV).
Matthew 11:28-30 - "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (NIV).
John 5:19 - "Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does" (NIV).
John 5:30 - "By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me" (NIV).
John 8:50 - "I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge" (NIV).
John 13:3-5 - "Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him" (NIV).
Philippians 2:8 - "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death– even death on a cross" (NIV)!
The supreme Creator of the universe is the most humble being in the universe. Power and humility. Do those character traits even fit together? Yes they do - perfectly only in Jesus. For Jesus did not just come to earth as a man, but He intentionally humbled Himself at every stage: 1) Jesus had no outward beauty or majesty to attract people to Himself (Isa. 53:2); 2) He had to learn and grow (Luke 2:40); 3) He had to learn the trade of carpentry (Mark 6:3); 4) His own family and town did not believe in Him (Mark 6:4-6); 5) Jesus depended on His Father for every word and action (John 5:19; 12:49); 6) He served His disciples (John 13:1-5); 7) Jesus subjected Himself to betrayal (John 13:18-30); 8) He became obedient to His Father to death, even death on a cross (Phil. 2:8); 9) Jesus shared His authority with the church (Matt. 16:19). No person could come close to matching the humility of Jesus.
