Emotional Security
Psalm 139:1-3 - "O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways." (NIV)
Jeremiah 29:11 - "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" (NIV)
Romans 5:1 - "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (NIV)
Romans 8:1-2 - "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death." (NIV)
Romans 15:13 - "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (NIV)
1 Peter 5:6-7 - "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (NIV)
The Father is so good. He not only wants to bring security to your identity and to your mind, but he wants to bring security to your emotions. We can often struggle with lowness of spirit and even depression when we are not experiencing the Father's love. He specifically comes to heal the broken-hearted, comfort those who mourn and remove the clothing of despair (Isa. 61:1-3). He knows the difficulty you have in sensing his closeness. Remember, Jesus showed how the Father weeps with you in your pain (John 11:35). So, how does the Father provide this emotional security?
The Father wants to fill you with a sense of significance. You are not significant because of your look or your talent. You are significant because you belong to him (1 John 3:1). He watches you and notices your contribution (Psa. 139:1-3). The Father is proud of you. When we do not hear and believe the Father's opinion of us, we are left emotionally insecure.
The Father wants to fill you with a sense of shamelessness. He wants you to know that you are in right standing with him (Rom. 5:1). There is nothing that he holds back from you (Rom. 8:31-34). Colossians 1:22 says, "But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation." (NIV) The Father wants you to carry yourself without shame, believing that you have been cleansed and completely forgiven. The enemy throws condemnation and shame on you. He rubs your face in your sin. The Father brings conviction and then hope for change.
The Father wants to fill you with a sense of expectation. He has a plan and purpose for your life (Jer. 29:11). But, often you have low expectations for your life. When you do not experience the Father's love, you struggle with believing that anything good will happen to you. The Father has hope in store for you, a filling of joy and peace as you trust him (Rom. 15:13). You can expect real intimacy with your Father when you have encountered his love.
