At our workplaces, in our schools, in our homes, who are we really serving? The answer to that question makes all the difference in how we serve. Keep Reading…
Listen to Ephesians 6 below and let God's Word soak into you.
Ephesians 6:5-9 - Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
Do you notice how language and behavior changes as soon as the boss shows up? When your authority is watching your work closely, do you notice that your effort picks up? It can be very common practice to accept an average performance when no one is looking. Why work harder than you have to?
Jesus turns this type of passive attitude on its head, as he tells us to work with ALL our hearts ALL the time. He tells us to treat our bosses like we would treat Jesus.
We can never use the excuse that our bosses are mean or don't understand us. If we treat them like Jesus, we will always respond in love. We will want to give 100% effort.
This doesn't give an out for bosses to be mean-spirited or demanding. Jesus reminds bosses that he is their Master. The best bosses understand their own role of submission to Jesus.
Are there certain situations in life that you give a half-hearted effort when no one is watching you? Make a decision before God today that you will serve HIM at all times, not allowing yourself any excuse for half-heartedness.
