How to Teach

CONTENT
Get the MAIN POINT OF THE MESSAGE
  • How to get it? From God's Word.  You should get your main point or focus from God in prayer with God's Word before you.
  • The stated main point can often be a specific text of Scripture.
  • You should be able to state it in a word, phrase or sentence (but not longer).
  • Keep referring to this point throughout the message.
Use SUPPORTING PRINICIPLES
  • Use 3 or 4 main principles to describe or add body to the main point.
  • These principles should come out of the Scriptures you are using. Don't just make things up to sound good.
Use SUPPORTING SCRIPTURES
  • You can use your notes, a concordance or Bible study tools on the internet.
  • You can read the Scripture aloud or say it in your own words (but always should give the reference).
  • Make sure that the Scripture is heard loud and clear as you back up the main point.
Use SUPPORTING TESTIMONIES
  • Be sure to use at least a couple of testimonies / personal examples / stories of how the supporting principles relate to the main point of the message.
  • Make sure that the testimony or story does not take up the whole time of the message.
DELIVERY OF THE MESSAGE
INTRO
  • You want to draw people in with a story, testimony or Scripture that supports the MAIN POINT.
  • Eventually, you want to clearly state the MAIN POINT.
BODY OF THE MESSAGE
  • You can use a Scripture or a simple statement to introduce the first SUPPORTING PRINCIPLE.
  • Each SUPPORTING PRINCIPLE should be backed up by Scripture.
  • You can use another story or testimony to back up each SUPPORTING PRINCIPLE.
  • As you move through the BODY of the message, it is helpful to re-state the principles you have already talked on.
APPLICATION
  • Be sure to re-state the MAIN POINT.
  • Clearly state the APPLICATION point(s). This can be introduced with a question.
  • The APPLICATION point can be focused on one point. It shouldn't be more than three points. People will forget what to apply very quickly.
  • APPLICATION can begin with praying together. It can end with worship, all praying out, people coming forward, etc.
** If nothing else, the audience should be left with the MAIN POINT, SCRIPTURAL back up and how to APPLY.
