The Debt of Kindness

KEY VERSE
2 Samuel 9:7 - Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table."

THINK ABOUT IT
After David had conquered much territory and subdued enemy nations, he began thinking about any debts of kindness that he owed. For he had promised his best friend, Jonathan (who was now dead), that he would always take care of his family.

David found one man, a crippled son of Jonathan, who needed kindness. He gave this man, named Mephibosheth, all the land of his grandfather, King Saul, and the privilege of eating at his table every day. Mephibosheth wondered what he had done to receive such overwhelming kindness.

You see King David had received so much undeserved kindness from God that he was willing to pass it on (2 Samuel 7:18). We also have received so much kindness from God (Titus 3:5). How could we not spread that kindness out to others?

The reason we become stingy with kindness is that we forget the kindness of God in our own lives. We forget that we are living moment by moment on God's undeserved mercy.

It's time to pass on the kindness of God to those who "don't deserve it."

PRAY
Oh God, let me be one who is a giver of kindness, not just a receiver. I will find opportunities today to lavish kindness on "the undeserving" around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
