Where do you run for comfort? The fridge, your friend, Netflix? We were made to receive comfort. In other words, this is a necessary part of being human… to receive comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
Do you realize that God is called the "Father of compassion and the God of ALL comfort"? He is your true source of comfort. Friends and food bring only fleeting comfort. But, the Father knows how to bring the deep soul satisfaction that we need.
An important part of quiet time is learning to receive comfort from God. This begins with acknowledging our need before him. When you are feeling fine, you still need his comfort. Acknowledge this before him. If you wait until you are deep in trouble to cry out for comfort, you will be running on empty. The Father desires that you will meet the troubles of life completely filled with comfort at the front end. This will bring an immovable security into your soul during your trial.
After acknowledging your need for comfort, then ask the Father to speak his words of comfort to you. He might lead you to a Bible passage. He might whisper his words of love to you. Ask him to speak, then listen.
Whether or not you begin to feel his comfort on you, begin thanking him that he is the compassionate God. Begin speaking out your belief that ALL comfort is found in him. Voice your gratefulness for his constant love. Your act of speaking out the truth of God's character will activate his comfort in your life.
