The Great I Am

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” Exodus 3:14 NIV
Thor, Superman, the Hulk - today’s versions of indestructible heroes. They possess other-worldly strength and travel between realms. We like to imagine a place where superheroes are real. But then reality sets in. For even our greatest superheroes have a weakness (kryptonite).

Moses lived in the real world and had a real job tending sheep. Suddenly his reality was intersected by the appearance of God in a burning bush. Moses asked the name of this great, holy being talking to him. God called himself the “I Am.”

God sets himself apart from all superheroes and supernatural creatures. For all of these “super” characters had a beginning. God, however, has always existed and always will exist. He is eternal. He is the great I Am, the creator and sustainer of all life.

No one and nothing can even compete with God. As the I Am, he is on a completely different level from everyone else. Yet, this I Am desires to come close. He speaks to Moses through a burning bush.

And he speaks to us through his Son, Jesus. In John 8:58, Jesus told the religious leaders that he is the “I Am.” In other words, Jesus called himself the eternal God. It is amazing to consider how the I Am walked our roads, healed our sicknesses and sacrificed himself for our sins.

Put your trust in the great I Am today. He knows the end from the beginning. He created your timeline, so he certainly holds your times in his hands. Don’t try to hide from the I Am. That would be futile.

Listen carefully to his voice. He knows best how to live your life. As the I Am, he is ever-present to counsel and direct your steps. So bow in worship… listen to him and obey. What would be a more fitting response to the great I Am?
