What's your "one thing"? What's that thing you keep going back to as your default purpose? Your mobile phone, your boyfriend / girlfriend, your ministry, your kids?
According to Jesus, only one thing is needed. One single focus. A single purpose. Often we can get lost serving many masters. Our hearts become distracted in many directions. We live without a sense of purpose, because we have missed the "one thing."
Mary chose the better path, according to Jesus. She chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to him. This doesn't seem like very purpose-filled or productive activity. Well, it would be if it was not Jesus speaking.
Martha took the typical route of finding purpose. She tried to find fulfillment through serving the Master, as opposed to listening to him. As she continued to serve, her shaky position was revealed. Jesus gently exposed her many worries and distractions.
How much time do you spend on what is best - listening to Jesus? Would you sacrifice the many good things you are thinking about and doing for the best - just sitting at his feet and listening to him?
When our purpose gets clarified, and we actually spend more time listening to Jesus, other necessary tasks amazingly get finished. It is at the feet of Jesus that we find out how to do all he has called us to do.
Stop stressing. Get focused on One Thing. Spend time today sitting at Jesus' feet. Listen to his voice.
