James 3:6 NIV - "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell." Keep Reading...
How quick we are with words. We can be slow to listen, quick to speak and quick to be angry (the opposite of James 1:19)! Everyone has a problem with their mouths. If you didn't, you would be a perfect person (James 3:2).
In fact, it gets worse. Our tongues are not just a bit out of control, but they are likened to a fire and a restless evil. In light of this, how is one supposed to live an upright life with fire in their mouth?
Ephesians 4:29 says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." So we must be able to control this fire and only let good things come out of us. We have no excuse for a bad mouth.
Can wholesome words alone come out of your mouth? Is this really possible? Jesus commands it, so it must be possible. One of the best ways to practice this is in affirming another person. Make it your goal to meaningfully affirm one person today. Tell them why you like them, why they make you laugh or how you see Jesus in them. Don't stop. Ask God who you should affirm next. Wholesome words will put water on the fire in your mouth.
