The Bible clearly lays out the rewards of fearing the Lord. It's important to realize what we would be giving up if we persisted in disobedience. Meditate on the following Scripture passages and be compelled to walk in the fear of the Lord. It just makes sense.
As we listen to God and obey his commands, we are guaranteed great reward. God tells Joshua, “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.” Joshua 1:7 Obedience to God will always bring success. Indeed, walking in the fear of the Lord will bring specific rewards. Let’s see what God has to say…
Long life - Proverbs 10:27
Avoid Evil - Proverbs 16:6
Learn wisdom - Proverbs 15:33
Wealth, honor, life - Proverbs 22:4
Intimate knowledge of God - Proverbs 2:5
The fear of the Lord is essential for our lives. It will ensure that we continue to walk in a pleasing way with God. The benefits are endless. In looking at the downside of not fearing the Lord, we could look at the opposites of the rewards above. A short life, stepping into evil, no wisdom, wealth, honor or life… and no intimate knowledge of God. Why would a person choose not to fear the Lord?
Find out how to fear the Lord in your day-to-day life. Ask God if there is any area of sin in your life that you slightly condone (i.e. do not hate). Cry out for the fear of the Lord in that area. Commit yourself to complete, joyful, wholehearted obedience. You will find great reward.
