21/9/2018 0 Comments Say it Again, Rejoice!
Joy can seem like an elusive feeling that comes and goes like the wind. We can feel like we have no control over this joy that should be flowing out of us. But another truth is given to us in Philippians 4:4. Keep Reading...
Philippians 4:4 NIV - Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Not only is joy possible, it is commanded. Paul even says in Philippians 3:1, "Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you." The Holy Spirit is intentionally repeating himself here in Philippians. He is saying, "I am trying to keep you safe with my reminders to rejoice!" Not only does the Holy Spirit remind us to rejoice, but he empowers us to do it. We can obey his command. But how? First, look for Jesus. Your joy needs a focus. The wise men did this and rejoiced greatly upon seeing him (same word for "rejoice" in both passages). Set your mind to think on the character of Jesus, who he is and all he has done in your life. Now, use your mouth to speak out joy. Rejoicing is an action, not a feeling. So use words of worship to lead yourself in rejoicing. Don't be subdued in your expression of joy. In obedience, surrender your mouth to Jesus and speak / sing out your joy. You might think rejoicing would be an insincere activity, and that's why you stop short of it. Remember - we are called to obey. So do your part of obedient rejoicing, and Jesus will match up your feelings with your obedient action.
