Romans 1:21 - For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
It is possible for all of us to experience times of darkness or heaviness in our lives. When sickness or trauma comes into our lives, we feel the hardship. When relationships break apart, pain enters in. These times of trial can be common to all of us.
But there is a darkness we sometimes experience that we produce. There are times of confusion that are completely avoidable. How? Romans 1:21 says that the lack of thanksgiving to God brings with it futility in our thinking and a darkness in our hearts. Confusion and darkness reign in the unthankful life.
Then in the following verses Romans 1:22-25 we read the downward spiral of sin that has its source in ungratefulness. People begin worshipping created things when God is not thanked as the Creator. Then comes the relentless pursuit of satisfaction outside of God… all because God is not seen as sufficient. Men and women get involved in all sorts of sexual immorality in an effort to satisfy themselves… all because God was not thanked as the One who satisfies.
It is a slippery slope once you stop thanking God. Confusion sets in. Darkness creeps upon you. Hardness of heart to the conviction of the Spirit numbs you. How much heaviness in your life could be avoided simply by obeying God to give him thanks?
On the other side - how much light and revelation could be yours if you set your mind and mouth to give God thanks?
