My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:1-5 NIV
Walking in the fear of Lord will bring you into an intimate relationship with God. So, it’s important to know how to fear the Lord. Proverbs 2 gives us some specific action steps on this. See below.
Accept my words - Believe that God's commands are actually his commands and not just helpful suggestions for how to live your life.
Store up my commands - Get God's commands inside of you. Read them. Recite them. Memorize them. Go over and over them.
Turn your ear to wisdom - Intentionally listen to God's specifics for your life as you read his Word. This takes pausing and leaning in to listen. Truth doesn't just come to you. You need to turn and lean in to listen.
Apply your heart to understanding - Train yourself to seek understanding from God. This takes perseverance and a deep desire to know his ways.
Call out for insight - Use you voice in obtaining the fear of the Lord. Acknowledge that you do not know enough. Call out that you need his insight. Actually speak up. Activate your voice in the pursuit of God's ways.
Cry aloud for understanding - If you want the fear of the Lord in your life, it's time to get desperate. Cry out for understanding. Don't try to retain your dignity. Cry out.
Look for it - Keep your eyes and ears open for God to reveal his ways to you. This is active looking, as if you were looking for silver.
Search for it - Look more deeply. Spend more time in the Bible looking for his ways. Treat the pursuit of the fear of the Lord like you are looking for hidden treasure. Research, study, think, pray.
Do you want intimate friendship with God? It's time to get active in walking in the fear of the Lord.
